Geopolitics and Transnational Cinemas: Towards a New Filmic Geography” is a three-year (2023-2025) research project funded by the Yushan Fellow Program, Ministry of Education, Taiwan. Led by Principal Investigator Song Hwee LIM of National Chung Hsing University, the core team of the project comprises international and local scholars who will explore various dimensions of transnational cinemas through the perspective of geopolitics.

The project’s aim is not so much to show how film narratives might reflect or challenge geopolitical discourses, but rather to highlight geopolitical dynamics that make possible (or impossible) the making and watching of films across borders, the means by which new filmic geographies can take shape, and the alternative routes that actors can embark upon in both the real world and the reel world. It will focus on material conditions and examine geopolitical forces that impact upon the production, circulation, and reception of films. It will argue that the liminal spaces between the national and the transnational, governed by geopolitical dynamics, render transnationality a default premise rather than occasional occurrence in these new filmic geographies.
